After many attempts by the Brits, Germans, Austrians, French and Americans to create a sewing machine, in 1830 a French tailor, Barthelemy Thimonnier, finally invented a machine using only one thread and a hooked needle that made the same chain stitch used with embroidery.  Interestingly, Thimonnier was almost killed by French tailors who feared unemployment.  They ultimately burned down his garment factory.
